Using Asus AiCloud and Smart Sync

Leading on from the review that I did on the Asus RT-AC66U wireless router, I wanted a bit more time to try out the new AiCloud features that Firmware 3.0.0.220 brings to the device.

The purpose of AiCloud is similar to Dropbox in terms of providing a Cloud storage facility for your documents, photos, media files etc. Like Dropbox this means that you can access your files from different devices wherever you are, as long as you have an Internet connection. You can also share files with others by means of a unique download link. AiCloud also allows you to sync files across devices using a SyncFolder feature, however this requires that you sign up for the free Asus WebStorage product, which can be accessed using a browser or using a specific application for Mac, Windows, iOS and Android devices. Again all very Dropbox.

Where AiCloud differs though is that it allows you to connect remotely to a USB disk connected to your RT-AC66U router at home and also allows you to remotely browse your network storage locations at home. You can browse files, download, upload, or even stream them over the Internet to the device you're using remotely. The streaming function works great with iOS, however is not perfect yet with OSX as Asus are still developing streaming software compatibility. The router also ties into the SyncFolder feature of Asus Webstorage, and by defining a sync location on the USB drive, it will remain synchronised with your cloud sync folder.

The Asus AiCloud website explains what it's all about in a bit more detail, probably better than I can !

So what's it like to use ?

I thought it would be useful to give an idea of what AiCloud & FileSync are like to use, and have put together a couple of short videos and some photos....

Asus WebStorage

The screenshot shows the layout of WebStorage - it's pretty clear and shows the folders available, along with file attributes shortcuts, shares and account info. The shot I've give is of the SyncFolder - these are the files that remain synchronised across all my devices via the cloud.

I thought a good way to show how this works would be to put together a short video. For this I've used a Windows 7 PC, iMac and iPhone to show how a file added to WebStorage on the PC automatically appears on the other devices. I've also shown how this all ties into the Asus RT-AC66U router, by using the Smart Sync function the USB drive connected to the router has a SyncFolder added to it. This makes the files available on your home network.

AiCloud
In order to use AiCloud, it first has to be enabled on the RT-AC66U router. This is done by navigating to the AiCloud page in the General section of the router's web admin.

If you haven't already set up an Asus DDNS address (see my earlier full review of the router), then you'll be prompted to do so here. There are 3 sections on the AiCloud screen - 1 or all of them can be enabled.
  • Cloud Disc - This enables access to the USB drive connected to the router via the Internet. Access is gained by using the AiCloud App on a mobile device, or by typing the DDNS address into your browser (I've got a video later showing this in action).
  • Smart Access - This allows you to remotely access your home network via the Internet. Again this is accessed through the AiCloud App or via a browser.
  • Smart Sync - This works in conjunction with your Asus WebStorage account and allows you to define a folder location on your USB drive attached to the router which will be used as a SyncFolder. This is what you saw in action on the the video earlier in this post.
The second tabbed screen under AiCloud on the router is Smart Sync.

This shows the status of the SyncFolder on the router, and also allows you to change settings (such as Asus WebStorage user details, folder location etc).

The third tab allows you to set up password protection settings.

This guards against a 'Brute Force' attack, and can lock access to the AiCloud account if the password is entered incorrectly. In order to reset it, you need to access the router web-admin (so for most people this would mean logging into it at home).

OK, time for another video ! This time I'm showing you what it's like to connect remotely to the USB drive connected to the router at home (and my other LAN storage devices). I'm accessing the router using AiCloud via my web browser using a MacBook Pro and Safari web browser. The Internet connection was nothing special, and was the wireless access offered by a high street chain cafe in Aberdeen. Hopefully the video will explain what's going on, as I haven't voiced it over ;-)

As I said earlier, you can also access the AiCloud service using mobile devices. I've tried this on both an iPhone 4S and a 1st generation iPad. Seems to work well in both cases, and the video & audio streaming functions are pretty good. No video this time, but a few screen shots will give you the idea.

App splash screen when opened.

Home screen

From the home screen you can explore the USB drive connected to the router (RT-AC66U in this case) or you can explore your other home network locations. Not all the listed locations can be viewed in my set-up though (Samsung CLX3185 is a printer and Wendy-MacPro isn't sharing files). Also note that that it also shows PC's that are sleeping - these can be wakened if required remotely. Drobo and NAS-M25 are both storage drives on my home LAN, and can be explored remotely (the App asks you to login to the drives as appropriate).

USB drive connected to router

Folders on router USB drive

SyncFolder on router USB drive

The 3 screen shots explore the USB drive connected to the router. As you can see, the SyncFolder is the same one that I used in the demo video earlier in this post (the Dredd 3D image).

Network drive

Screen shot showing the folders available remotely on my NAS-M25 drive. As you can see from the folder titles there are loads of media files on here, and AiCloud allows me to either stream or download these remotely.

Summary

Hopefully this post has given folks a better idea of what AiCloud can & can't do. I think overall it's a good product, and a great free addition to anyone that has a suitable Asus network device (at the time of writing there are only 3 of these: RT-AC66U, RT-N66U and RT-N16, however I believe more are being enabled, such as the DSL-N55U). I really like being able to access my home network files remotely, and this is something that I'll get use out of when travelling away from home - especially important given the limited storage space available on an iPad or iPhone.

The FileSync feature of AiCloud is fine too, although this and the WebStorage product are pretty similar to the service offered by Dropbox. The main advantage I can see with the Asus offering is the integration of WebStorage with AiCloud. I've only just started using this storage product, so will see how it goes. At the end of the day, 2GB is free to use, so it's worth trying out.

An area where I think Asus can improve AiCloud is to add multiple user logins. The router already allows multiple user shares to be set up for the attached USB drive (Samba), so I don't think this will be difficult to accomplish. A use for this type of functionality could be to allow other members of a family to access the folders on the router connected USB drive and the home network drives. User access rights can be taken from the shares already configured in the router.

  1. Just to add a comment about the Android side of Aicloud apps.
I was only able to see the folder/files of the NAS connected to my ac66u router with this apps.
No way to copy/paste from my phone's picture gallery to my NAS whereas it works with a browser (eg: using IE on PC Windows ).
For me, this is a big issue whereas it works perfectely with Dropbox or Box on Android phones ( xPeria Ray ).
I think asus forgot to integrate copy/paste feature on the Android apps :-(
I hope that they will support other sync service as they only offer the 2Go free webstorage account for ac66u buyers as everybody...

  2. Thanks for your comments - hopefully Asus will update the service. Speaking to them there are already mods in the pipeline to add multiple users to AiCloud, which is good.

In terms of the free 2GB storage, this comes free to all users that open a Web Storage account, and not just AC66U users.

    1. Hi Willie,
Thanks for commenting - looks like my info was wrong, and as you rightly say, the RT-N56U currently can't run AiCloud. I was sure I'd read this somewhere before, but not the case.

I'll contact Asus directly and see if they plan to add this functionality in a future FW release.

    2. Thanks Andy,

That would definitely seal the deal for me. They did say more models coming soon. Hopefully this one would be on there. I have also been looking at the Western Digital MyNet N900 which is a router with a built in hard drive and has its own cloud apps. However, I've read some pretty bad reviews, seems pretty buggy. The Asus routers seem alot more robust. -Willie

    3. Willie,
Just received the following update from Asus regarding AiCloud functionality on the RT-N56U:

“Yes our engineers are working on it, for both RT-N56U and DSL-N55U. Since both models comes with only 8MB of flash so AiCloud cannot fit into the firmware, needs to download from our server and install to HDD/USB disk instead, which differs from existing models that already supports AiCloud such as RT-N66U and RT-AC66U. So it takes time to develop this function. Thanks.”

      Hope this helps :-)

Thanks for the update. I wonder how having the firmware on the attached storage will affect performance? Maybe i should just fork it over for the n66. -Willie

  4. Thanks for a great review. quick question:
    1. Can you print directly from an IOS device like an ipad to a printer which is NOT IOS enabled using this router?

    2. Have u tried performance with a USB 802.11c stick dongle?

    1. Hi,
      (1) I'm guessing your asking about using the printer via the router rather than AiCloud functionality. I haven't tried attaching a printer to the USB port as I already have an ethernet device on my network, however I don't think attaching one to the router directly would allow iOS devices to print unless it was an Air Print device. Printers are configured to the router using either a Windows based wizard (which you download) or configuring via LPR, which effectively gives your printer an IP on your network.

      (2) I haven't tried an ac compliant stick yet - sorry. The AC unit is the only one I have, so I haven't been able to test AC to AC performance at all, however I was pretty pleased with N !

  5. My UBUNTU system sees the RT-N66U router addon USB drive as a storage device just as my Win 7 system does. I can boot either on my I7 Lenovo Ideacenter. Also, I have no trouble accessing the files through the ASUS domain and my browser. If I set up the router's cloud feature to make the files Read and Write capable, then I can delete them via aicloud. If Read Only, then I can only delete them by unplugging the drive from the router and plugging it into a USB port. It might become more convenient to simply change the RO to RW in Router aicloud setup.

I haven't hooked a printer up yet either. And I would like to add multiple user accounts so my wife and niece can sync their address books and personal files. Right now the hard drive is a 250G USB powered passport type. I plan to replace it with a 2T separately powered USB drive. I envision setting it up with family-accessible files like photos and flicks, and private area files which I can write to remotely, but allow the public read-only access. To me this is about avoiding the high costs of cloud storage for files seldom accessed.

I also note that the dual band function of the router works great. It is lightning fast.

And the RT-N66U seems to have good reach. The router sits on top of my computer at the back of my living room, about 30 feet from my front door. My android phone can access the files through the router from out in the parking lot. I live in a condo building, and I'd like to know how many neighbors can see my router through their home computers and phones.

I notice very good throughput with this router's dual band function.

In the early fall, I saw the router on sale online for $140 or thereabout. Today I see it for $160 online I'd be insane to buy any other router for the price. I love this RT-N66U. I have not had to restart it since I connected it two months ago, and I have several wireless computers and smart phones using it without a hitch.

I give the RT-N66U 5 stars and 2 thumbs up. For the price, it's top of the ladder, cream of the crop, and pick of the litter.

  9. Hi Andy

I have a small issue that I would like for you to help me, if this is possible.
I bought a RT-AC66U and run the merlin Firmware 3.0.0.4.374.32. Attached to this router I have a 2 TB WD harddisc. So far everything is ok.
On top of these devices I bought myself a Sony TV Model kdl-46hx920 which has dnla and network capability.

What I would like to achieve is the possibility to show pictures to visitors from my external harddisc attached to the router with my Sony TV.
In order to do this I prefer to have my picture folder from Windows 8 to sync with a picture folder attached on the router. This way i can show the pictures on the TV regardless if my computer is on or off.

On my TV i can choose to watch videos, pictures, or listen/watch music.
When I choose home network on my TV i see the RT-AC66U, when I click on it i get 2 folders named "Browse folder" and "Pictures" When I click on "Browse folder" i get a folder named (null) , I click on this folder I get 2 folders, "Download2" and a folder named "smartsync". When I click on the above folder named Pictures I get a folder named "Camera" and "folder".

When I click on the RT-AC66U Mediaserver on my Windows 8 PC i can see the same folders as on my TV.
I tried to drag and drop a picture or file into a folder of the media server. Doing this I get this round red icon, meaning that i cannot drop something into these folders.

My question is: how do i get my pictures from the PC into the external harddisc and have the PC folder with my external harddisc folder syncronized. Normally I put all my pictures on my computer (there is also my Photostream Apple folder)

Is there a possibility to do this, without having to use the cloud.
I hope I could explain my problem. How would you approach an issue like this ?

    Thanks A. Tomasella from Switzerland

    1. Hi,
First of all my apologies for not replying to you sooner than this !
To get the photos onto your TV do you have the hard disc attached to one of the USB ports on the back of the router ? If that's the case then it should be a simple job of dropping photos into a folder created on the USB connected drive. You can do this manually or you can use Asus SmartSync to keeps things up to date with your cloud account.
If your hard disc is a NAS device, and is on the same network as the router, then I think you'd need to have something like Twonky running on the NAS device to serve the media from the NAS drive - I think the Asus router only media serves from a disk directly attached to the USB port.
Give it a try with a USB flash drive and see how that works.

Does your WD drive have any admin settings that prevent it from being accessed over the internet ? Can you access everything else on your home network remotely ? 16. You'll be entering the WD drive storage interface via http I would assume (using a browser ?). However if you are able to get into that then make sure that your username and password for the WD unit are set up, as well as access privileges for the WD drive shares. Once that's done then you should be able to access through the Asus device and when the username and password for the NAS are requested simply put in the details that you've already set up in the WD web interface. That should work, but if not then I'm a bit lost and can only suggest you do a Google search for others that may be getting the same issue.

I'm a pretty UN-savy guy with computer lingo and hardware/software... so....
How much "space" is there on the cloud? Do I plug in a 1Tb Drive and get to use that? Is there a fee for using it? Seems something about 2GB in the posts... is that just internal?

  19. Hi Gary,
Just had a look at the RT-AC68U - nice product, but one I haven't tried. It's an upgraded version of the RT-AC66U, which I have tested. AiCloud has also improved a bit since I did this review.
To answer your questions though, you can plug any size of USB drive into the router and use that as your cloud storage space. This means you can save stuff to it across your home network but also access it from the internet remotely. The drive connected in this way can be set to sync automatically with your Asus Webstorage account and other devices that you have running the Asus software (Smart Sync). AiCloud also lets you configure Smart Access on the router which means that you can access other network storage locations on your home network over the internet. I use this to access a NAS unit in my test above. Works pretty well for browsing and downloading/saving files, but unless your internet upload speed is fast, it isn't much use for streaming video.
    Hope this helps.

    1. Thanks Andy for being so quick to answer and with good detail. (A bit over my head but I do get it...) so I assume (?) it's free? Or does Asus Webstorage charge like a monthly thing? Do I meed to have the Smart Sync or Webstorage to use the USB "I" plug in? Thanks again.

    2. It's a free service. If you don't have a static IP, the router guides you through what to do to use a service that covers this. Also Asus supply you with a domain name (that you can personalise) so you can link to your cloud storage over the internet. It's all explained on the router set-up instructions and in the FAQ's (there are links in the router web interface).
If you just plug in your USB drive you get network attached storage space and don't need to use the other services.
